Week 5 Blog: Ender's Game, Chapter 5, 6

(Begins May 3 - Ends May 10)
(*You can always post earlier. If you post later, you will only receive half credit.)

Chapter 5

1) What kinds of strategies does Ender learn from watching the older boys play computer games in the game room? What are some of the weaknesses that the older boys demonstrate?

2) Do computer games train people to think like computers?

3) Throughout the book, Ender encounters a series of systems put in place by the adults. In chapter 5, he learns how to “play” at least one of these systems. Which system does he master, and to what benefit?

Chapter 6
There are two major games (game-like scenarios) explored in this chapter. One takes place in the battle room, and one takes place during Ender’s “Free Play” time.

1) What is different about the nature of reality in the battleroom? What issues arise due to these differences? What possibilities also arise? Have you ever faced these issues in computer/console game? How might we push these issues and possibilities in a new direction?

2) What kind of game is “Free Play”? What do you think of Ender’s responses to the guessing game?

  1. Chapter 5

    1) He learns strategies like making a row of mines to destroy a larger group of enemies that are following you. The main weakness that the older boys show is that they are only decent verse the computer. They've got all the computer moves memorized so they can respond to it very quickly BUT they aren't well practice verses other people. They aren't going to be fighting computers in the real war.

    2) I think they would if the scenarios were randomized and created by the computer but most computer game scenarios are created by people so you're pretty much adapting to think like the creator. Multiplayer is a huge element in a lot of games and I think one of its more rewarding aspects is that you are versing other people who, if they know what they're doing, are constantly changing strategies to adapt to any given situation. This is a much more difficult foe but after a while you'll find that being good against other people online makes you even better verses the computer.

    3) The system that Ender learns to manipulate is the message system for the desks. He found a way to create a new profile or even use another student's profile to send messages. He uses this to make fun of Bernard for looking at butts and pretty much turns the tides of who has control in the launch group.

  2. 1. Ender learned the computers strategies and easily began to recognize and memorize them. The older boys have also figured this out and use it to their advantage when they practice but they don't do so well in live practice.

    2. I dont think computers train people to think like them. People are the ultimate creators of computers and programs.

3.Ender uses the messaging system to his advantage.
